Another option is the trek organised by the State Tourism Department, which starts daily at 7am from the boat landing station by the Periyar Lake.

Elephant Ride

At The Elephant Court, we have a special, customised elephant ride package for our guests. The route will take you through villages that dot the countryside with several stopovers. The ride can be as long or as short as you want it to be. Only two people sit atop the elephant at a time – the rest of the group treks along and take turns eventually. If you so wish, the ride could be through the jungle as well.
Timing: 10am to 5pm
Minimum duration: 30 minutes

Periyar Tiger Reserve Visit

Treks through the Periyar Tiger Reserve start at 9am and end at noon. Each trekking group will consist of a maximum of five visitors, five guides and two forest officials. On this trek, prepare to meet elephants, Nilgirilangurs, giant squirrels and even tigers.

Bullock Cart Discoveries

For a truly rustic and quaint experience, take a bullock cart ride to the nearby villages. Visitors can see vineyards, and ride past farms with diverse crops like mango, tamarind, onion, sunflower, jasmine, and so on. This visit is a rare insight into the traditional ways of local farming, culture and lifestyles.

Jeep Safari

Climb into a Jeep and head to the exotic locale of Gavi, which lies 39km away. The destination won’t be the only highlight of the journey – the route itself is a picturesque trail through the Western Ghats. Once you are in Gavi, there are several trails through the evergreen forests, where elephants roam, to camping sites and viewing points. The trails pass through dense forests where sunlight hardly penetrates the canopy even at midday..

Plantation Tour

About 4,000 sq. km of the Idukki district, in which lies Thekkady, is dedicated to spice plantations. Take the hour-long tour from the resort that will take you through these cool, green plantations to see how spices are grown. Cardamom, pepper, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and tea are among the exotic array of the local produce.

Nature Walk

Want to bond even better with nature, smell the flowers and hear the murmurs of the ancient trees? Take the 3-hour nature walk that is on between 7am and 10.30am, and between 2pm and 5pm. A maximum of five persons can trek at a time along each nature trail, accompanied by a trained tribal guide.

Jungle Scouting
Would you like to experience the jungle by night? The jungle scouting programme is part of the regular night patrolling in the fringe eco-development zones of the tiger reserve. Up to eight visitors can join the scouting in one slot that lasts three hours. They will accompany two Protection Watchers and an armed forest guard. By participating, you would be actually patrolling and helping protect the forests of the Periyar region.
